Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, demons, and sinister influences increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of heroes who will split off from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Seekers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear mismatched, but the events of the third episode show why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a intense first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose death initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, striking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then cleared his debts and fled to a secure base in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in the region and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the team enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The fighter vowed a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

According to the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Explorers and Planners groups.

Audiences can expect finding out which players will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
