RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
