Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
